GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Senior libero Steph Vial (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) tallied 38 digs to help Gettysburg down Salisbury and City College (N.Y.) in the first day of the Battlefield Classic on Friday at Bream Gym. Vial had 30 digs in the first match of the day against Salisbury, the 24th of which made her Gettysburg's all-time digs leader.

The Bullets (2-4) defeated Salisbury, 3-1 (31-29, 30-21, 23-30, 30-16), in the first match of pool play. After having the middle match off while the Sea Gulls swept City College, Gettysburg then came back to sweep the Beavers, 30-8, 30-17, 30-17, in just one hour and four minutes.

Junior Lauren Thul (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), freshman setter Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and sophomore outside hitter Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) all recorded double-doubles against Salisbury. Thul had 13 kills and 14 digs. McConville matched her in kills and added 10 digs, and Krampf dished out 39 assists and 19 digs.

In the nightcap against City College, McConville led the Bullets with nine kills. Vial was the team leader with eight digs, and Krampf and classmate Jade Dunhour (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) each collected 15 assists.

In the first game of the Salisbury match, Gettysburg scored 10 of the last 15 points to overcome a 24-21 deficit and take a 31-29 victory. A kill by junior outside hitter Katie Heffner (Easton, Pa./Easton) gave the Bullets game point at 29-26, but a kill by Sea Gulls sophomore outside hitter Stacey Krebs and a kill and a service ace by freshman defensive specialist Gabby Long tied it up. Gettysburg pulled ahead on a service error and put the game away with a McConville kill. Vial got her first 10 digs of the day in game one.

The Bullets went on to build a 17-12 lead in game two. Salisbury ripped off three straight points to cut the deficit to two, but a Sea Gull service error started Gettysburg on a 13-5 run to close the game. The third game saw Salisbury open up a 16-10 lead. The Bullets would get as close as four points on three occasions, but two attack errors down the stretch helped the visitors take the game.

Vial, who had tied the career digs mark midway through game three, wasted no time in pushing to the top of the list in game four. During the rally that led to the game's first point, Vial collected her 1,705th career dig, passing Megan Wargo, who played from 1998-2001. The Bullets ripped off the first seven points of the game and took a 10-1 lead on the way to a 30-16 victory.

Gettysburg opened its second match of the day against City College on a 6-1 run and took leads of 14-3, 17-4 and 25-5 before eventually earning a 30-8 victory in game one, which was a foreshadowing of things to come. The Bullets cruised to consecutive 30-17 wins in games two and three to complete the sweep.

Gettysburg will return to the court on Saturday to play two more matches. The Bullets will take on Pool B winner Elizabethtown at 10 a.m. and Pool C winner Seton Hill at 2 p.m.
